The Hummer, or the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (short: HMMWV, mostly called Humvee for the sake of simplicity) is an all-terrain vehicle that was developed as the successor to the M151 for the U.S. Army and has been developed by the U.S. manufacturer since 1985 AM General is produced in different versions.
On March 22, 1983, the U.S. Army entered into a $ 1.2 billion contract with AM General to supply 55,000 HMMWV units in 15 different designs, following a bid for this vehicle in the 1970s against the Lamborghini LM002.
The U.S. Army eventually ordered 70,000 units, increasing the order volume to $ 1.6 billion.
It was the largest military wheel vehicle contract ever signed by the U.S. Army. In 2007 the U.S. Marine Corps had approximately 20,000 Humvees and the U.S. Army more than 120,000.
