Puffer fish as multi layer picture
The puffer fish family includes about 200 species. Their body length varies between 2 centimeters in the dwarf or pea puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) and 120 centimeters in the giant puffer (Arothron stellatus).
The body shape of puffer fish differs greatly from the typical fish shape. He has a round, stocky build. The head and eyes are well developed. The beak-like biting apparatus consists of teeth that have grown together to form toothed ridges, with two toothed ridges at the top and two at the bottom. The scientific naming of this family of highly developed bony fish also refers to this: Tetraodontidae = four-toothed. Their leathery, resilient skin is bare, scales reduced to short spines.
The propulsion is mainly by the pectoral fins. The dorsal fin and anal fin only whirl along for support. The caudal peduncle and caudal fin serve as rudders. This makes the puffer fish quite slow, but extremely agile. He can swim both forwards and backwards and climb up and down. A special feature of the puffer fish is that they have no pelvic fins.
Puffer fish can pump up when threatened. To do this, they use their strong muscles to press water out of the oral cavity in jerks into a sac-like expansion of the stomach on the abdominal side. This should act as a deterrent to attackers. Strong circular muscles at the entrance to the stomach prevent the water from flowing back. The spines, which otherwise lie close to the body, now point outwards and act as barbs. Because of this and the enormous increase in volume, it is almost impossible for a predator to devour the puffer fish. Jacques Cousteau reports that puffer fish inflate the jaws of large predatory fish (sharks) so that they get stuck and the predator suffocates. If puffer fish are deliberately provoked to inflate by people, this is associated with great stress for the fish - they find it difficult to expel the water they have absorbed. When out of the water, they pump air into the stomach sac, but soon suffocate.
The green puffer has the smallest known genome of any vertebrate. It consists of an estimated 28,000 genes.
